Cassie is a shy young research physician, suffering from narcolepsy, a disorder that causes sudden, uncontrollable sleep. Working with colleagues Doctors Einen and Konzelman as part of a medical research team, she helps synthesize a drug that could cure this debilitating condition. On the day the drug is ready, Cassie meets with Robert Turner a reporter who is covering the groundbreaking story and interviewing the trial participants. But moments before Cassie is about to be injected with the drug - the unthinkable happens - several test patients go into seizure and die.
