JAMES WOODS
He’s known as one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic actors, largely due to the array of chaotic characters he has chosen to portray. A murderer, a gangster, a drug dealer, a bent cop… he’s played them all with style. It’s a far cry from the gifted student who studied Political Science at the prestigious MIT University in Massachusetts.

In the late 1960s Wood’s decided to trade studying for acting and spent the 70s appearing in bit parts in crime shows like Kojak and The Rockford Files. His first leading role came in Fast Walking in 1982, but it’s his portrayal of Max Renn in David Cronenberg’s dark and disturbing Videodrome (1983) that has left the most lasting impression. Once Upon a Time in America was the film that turned Woods into a star.

Woods famously fired his agent for dismissing an offer by a then little known director called Quentin Tarrantino to star in Reservoir Dogs because the fee was too low. In the mid and late nineties he chewed up the screen as a thoroughly unlikable petty crook and drug addict in Martin Scorsese’s Casino, and as a leather clad demon hunter in John Carpenter’s Vampires he showed that he doesn’t always take himself too seriously. His subtle and mature performance in The Virgin Suicides showed a more gentle side to his acting style.

Woods is an uncompromising actor whose willingness to throw himself into every role and to work with controversial directors in challenging films rather than seeking commercial success has made him one of Hollywood’s most interesting leading men.
