JEFF GOLDBLUM
The charismatic Goldblum started his film career with a role in Death Wish (1974) credited as ‘Freak#1’. Quite fitting for a guy whose most famous role is as a scientist who turns into a giant fly.
Jeff Goldblum’s big break came when he landed the lead role in David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986). As Seth Brundle, the scientist who inadvertently merges his body with that of a bluebottle (as you do), Goldblum delivered an astounding performance that’s as funny as it is tragic and horrific. Not many actors could pull off the portrayal of a man turning into a giant insect with their dignity intact, but Goldblum makes the scenario seem all too real. Once you’ve seen The Fly it’s very hard to forget.
He went on to star in weird comedies Earth Girls Are Easy and The Tall Guy, but in the nineties Jeff clearly decided it was about time he made some money. So in 1993 he starred in Jurassic Park as a scientist trapped on a dinosaur infested island, then in 1996 he played another scientist in the alien invasion blockbuster Independence Day, and in 1997 he starred in The Lost World: Jurassic Park as a scientist who is trapped on another dinosaur infested island. Are you noticing a pattern here?
Along with The Fly these roles earned Goldblum the reputation of always playing the geeky scientist, but in real life he’s quite the ladies man, especially when it comes to his co-stars. His first wife was Patricia Gaul who appeared in The Big Chill; second came Geena Davis, whom he starred in three films alongside; and in the mid-nineties came a high profile engagement to Laura Dern, his co star from the Jurassic Park films.
